A  Divine Directive

Having received a confirmation that a small parcel awaited me at a local pick-up locker, I decided to act on it quickly. Now having frequently looked to the Lord for help in moving at every bidding of the Holy Spirit, I felt a divine directive to take a number of Via Gospel Magazines with me for distribution upon the way.

The walk was about a half mile each way, and I counted out 15 copies to take with me; Oh me of little faith! I neared my destination with eight copies left, when I saw a plethora of letter boxes on the outer wall of a building. I placed a copy in each of the first eight boxes, and counted, or rather "miscounted" a further 23!

When I had successfully retrieved my package I set of back home to take further copies to the easily-accessed letter boxes. I thought I needed 26; that is, 23 at that site, and a further three boxes I had spotted across the road from it.

I counted out thirty copies of Via, miniscule faith this time! Retracing the steps of my earlier journey I reached the wall of letter boxes. I had miscalculated, there were actually 11 less than I thought. So with 15 copies to hand I looked for alternative opportunities, and readily found them, nearby and accessible. I completed my little task and made my way home, feeling a tiny sense of achievement, but only, I trust as a mere instrument in the hands of the Spirit of God.

I believe I had "cast my bread upon the waters," notice it is "waters" plural, a type of the restless turmoil of this world, the "bread" typical of the Word of God. Ecclesiastes 11:1.

It is my earnest longing that the Gospel truths contained in these magazines will be read, and believed, and will lead many in the goodness of God to repentance, and thus to the salvation of precious souls, for His own glory, and that of the Son of His love.

Report: International Tract Distribution Day (10)

Memories

As you will observe today is the tenth anniversary of a humble spiritual exercise I had whilst tracting alone. Feeling that it would be amazing if all over the world saints would be engaged in distributing the Word of God in printed form: at the same time! I conceived this thought and followed it through to designate that same day as the International Tract Distribution Day ,and invite all who are able, to distribute at least one gospel missive on that particular day; all of course if it is the Lord's will.

I never realised I would be still excited by the idea, ten years later! Although I admit, if the Lord has not yet come, and I am still "in the body," I am not sure that I will be able to participate so enthusastically.

I set out in the early afternoon, between my appointment for a Coved vaccination and my annual eye test. The joys of old age! It proved to be a lovely afternoon, pleasantly warm with just a gentle breeze. it could not have been more conducive for the task in hand. I am persuaded it was of the Lord's goodness and grace.

Apart from the fact that I found three houses I never knew existed, there is not much to recount. I delivered "Via Magazines" to flats located in two high rise buildings, and an adjoining road. To complete my task I went to three places where I was able to place Via in multiple letter boxes. I was unable to use the 200 I took with me, my usual allocation for I.T.D.D. but I managed to use 134 copies. I am so thankful to the Lord that my mobility is very good as I approach my eightieth birthday. What loving-kindness, what mercy.

Please pray that the Lord will bless His distributed Word wherever and whenever it is pleasing to Him. It is a delight to be in fellowship with all the Lord's beloved people. who know the constraining power of His love to make Him known.

May the Lord Jesus Himself bless everyone who read this brief report, for His glory.

"And an angel appeared to Him from heaven strengthening Him."

Luke 22:43.

In the Scriptures there are numerous brief phrases and statements we may easily overlook. So many of them are couched in words of divine simplicity, on account of which we my read them with minimal concentration and meditation. But I am equally sure by the grace of God, apprehended by them, and caused to to muse upon them, thus we find surprising benefit for our soul. I suggest that the above quotation from the Word of God is a perfect example.

I must stress rigorously that I am very conscious of how easy it is to intrude into things concerning the Person of the Son that belong exclusively to the Father; all such is profane curiosity! May the Lord keep me, and all His own loved ones from such an independent spirit, from such a horrible affront to God. Pure speculation and unbridled imagination go beyond the constraints of divine revelation.

"And an angel appeared to Him from heaven strengthening Him." This is recorded as taking place in Gethsemane, that garden on the slopes of the Mount of Olives. Even the suggestion of help from "without" at Golgotha is totally impossible; there in "the place" the Lord Jesus suffered, bled and died atoningly ALONE! How then do we understand this astonishing revelation that took place where He was wont to frequent?

Firstly, what did the angel do? Nothing apart from "appearing," as far as I understand it. The "clue," (if I am permitted to use such a word), lies in the phrase "from heaven" for it surely indicates that heaven had not been "shut up" to Him, which was the awful reality during those three hours of impenetrable darkness at Golgotha. How the appearance of one from His native sphere would have "strengthened Him."

"Here again, however, observe that the suffering (in the garden of Gethsemane) differs essentially from atonement. For not only does He speak out of the full consciousness of His relationship with the Father, but He has also the angelic help which would have been wholly out of season when forsaken of God because of sin-bearing. All was most real."                                          Exposition of the Gospel of Luke.  W.K.

Another has written: "But how could this angelic creature strengthen the incarnate Creator? The angel "appeared" we are told. That was all. He did not do anything. he came as an ambassador of heaven and by simply standing there, he showed that all his felloes stood undaunted with the Son of God." G.T.B.

I feel that my thoughts on this amazing incident are in their simplicity correct, and welcome such confirmation from two who were mighty in the Scriptures. T.W.

International Tract Distribution Day

If the Lord will, the International Tract Distribution Day 2026 (I.T.D.D.) will take place on Saturday 18th April. This would be the tenth consecutive year, an amazing answer to prayer; "He is faithful."

Just in case you are not familiar with this lowly service for the Master, I will briefly explain. Our longing is that for at least this one day annually, every able believer will distribute at least one tract, magazine, booklet, etc containing Glad Tidings in written form. There is no "upper limit" as to the number of missives any individual saint feels exercised; but at least one. The initial thought was  that a nominated day each year would be set aside to flood the whole world with the Gospel message; 24 hours of Gospel saturation.
The method of distribution is entirely left with the Lord's people who are able and willing to participate. Please share in this simple task for the glory of our soon-coming Saviour, in the salvation and restoration of many, many precious souls.

A Frightening Statistic

As you would expect from the heading to this Post there should be some statistical information here, but when I attempted to retrieve it I was inundated with similar stats and wallowed helplessly in the ever-swelling ocean of the increases in the Romanist System. Here in the U.K. Romanists out-number Anglicans! In the U.S.A. I believe there has been an increase of 0.9%, which may seem of little consequence, except when the Americas have far and away the most Romanists in the entire world. Increases appear to be everywhere, without exception. A terrifying prospect.

Although the statistical information was to be confined to the U.K. I have now every reason to suggest it is mirrored all over the earth. We are in the "last hour," ( i.e. a period characterised by one thing,) and "antichrists" abound, just as the Apostle John was divinely caused to record in his First Epistle.

One of the most powerful organisations on earth is Romanism, erroneously titled "Roman Catholicism," the term itself is a contradiction etymologically, in that "catholic" means "universal." Tragically it does have a worldwide adherence, recently estimated to be about 1.406 to 1.410 billion "baptised" followers. This figure represents about 17.7% of the global population.

The Roman religion is the most blasphemous of all religions as it claims to be Christianity, where others refuse any tenets of the true Christian Faith. Romanism is not only blasphemous but idolatrous, superstitious, ritualistic, and enforced by a spiritually corrupt priest-craft, the individual priests terrorising their dupes with fear and superstition; while the Pope lays claim to personal infallibility, and the superiority of the Roman "churches' " teachings over the very Word of God. The Pope is himself an, (not "the"}, antichrist.

But perhaps what perplexes me most is that some, perhaps many, of my fellow believers assure me there are true believers within its abominable system. I am absolutely certain this is a dreadful error.

If I may just draw attention to an Old Testament incident that destroys any possibility of a true child of God being found in the ranks of Romanism. You will recall the wonderful conversion of Naaman. I am sure I do not have to remind you of all the details, but if need be turn to the Scripture itself:             2 Kings 5:1-27. I owe my discernment as to this grave matter to another whose explanation I read many years ago. But I would like to quote him verbatim as his ability to express this truth far excels my own.

The verses in question: "In this thing Jehovah pardon thy servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to bow down there, and he leans on my hand, and I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon- when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, Jehovah pardon thy servant, I pray thee, in this thing. And he (Elisha) said to him, Go in peace."

Our well instructed brother answers the query, did the Prophet give his sanction to Naaman to continue in idolatry: my words. But the words of wisdom begin thus. "We consider it wholly untenable. He did not tell him to go, for this would be to sanction idolatry. He did not tell him not to go, for this would be placing him under a yoke of legality. He simply said, "Go in peace," which was casting him back upon the grace which he had already experienced, and the exercise of an ENLIGHTENED CONSCIENCE. There were three things Naaman received in connection with his cleansing, namely, an ENLARGED HEART, an ENLIGHTENED UNDERSTANDING and an EXERCISED CONSCIENCE." Our dear late brother continues to elaborate on these things, but surely this is sufficient for all of us when we received the Holy Spirits' indwelling  "upon believing?" Even a newly "born from above" believer if he did return to a Romish mass, would immediately withdraw from such a scene in holy horror and never return.

As much as the grace of God would help me I love every Roman Catholic, and long for their salvation. But I abhor with all my being the dreadful Romish System.

The capital letters in the text are my own, as feeling they are so significant. T.W.

Sir David Attenborough: A Personal Critique

The world-wide celebrated naturalist Sir David Attenborough is fast approaching his one hundredth birthday, if it please the Lord to spare him in His mercy.
Here in the U.K. there is an outcry for him to be honoured by marking his birthday with a Bank Holiday. An indication of how he is revered in this country. Unending plaudits saturate the internet, with barely any suggestion of jis obvious fallibility and rejection of the Word of God.
He is a natural historian of considerable experience spanning four decades. And he has been marvellously privileged in witnessing more wonders of God's creation, than any man since Adam. But with his "mind blinded by the god of this world" he is effectively grossly ignorant. he practically admits this in his claim to be an "agnostic:" "One who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God." So, he does not know and he cannot know anything of the revelation of the Creator in the beautiful creation scene that he has studied for decades!
He was responsible for foisting the blasphemous Jacob Bronowski's "The Ascent of Man," a title so diametrically opposed to the witness granted to man in the written Word of God, and in the spiritual instruction found in the natural world.
Attenborough described humans as "a plague in the earth." We dare not consider this statement anything less than awful blasphemy against the incarnate Son of God.
He spoke of sending food to famine -stricken countries as "barmy." And according to Attenborough improving "women's rights" around the world is an effective way to limit our birth-rate.
In 2002 he joined "leading" clerics and scientists to oppose the inclusion of creationism in the curriculum of U.K. state-funded schools. While today The Theory of Evolution is a legal requirement in that same curriculum.
Sir David Attenborough is also a member of a secret society, which should actually be banned as unlawful, but the Act that determines it such will never be enforced. He is a member of the Newbury and West Berkshire Lodge, he is a freemason, but if you want to access this material without this information, you will spend countless hours searching, I did-because back in the late 1980's until the early 1990's I was involved in the Bookselling Trade; part of my remit was dealing with numerous "Reps" acting for any number of Publishing Houses. And in 1984 two fo Sir David's brothers prevented (though temporarily) the publication of a book exposing something of the evils of Freemasonry. They exerted colossal pressure on the Publisher to cancel the first print-run at the very last moment. They asserted it was in due deference to their father who was a prominent Freemason. But the book was published very soon afterwards by a rival Publishing House. A consequence of the halt placed upon the book's publication cost the reluctant Publisher an immense sum, not to speak of the revenue that accrued to their rival company. the publication in question is
"The Brotherhood" by Stephen Knight.

I well remember the anger of Freemasons from every quarter, they were irate beyond measure. But the quickly realised that silence was the best defence and the furore over many of the revelations within the book soon died down and slowly drained away completely. Other such books arrived on the scene but never caused the Masons any problems comparable with "The Brotherhood."
My "critique" as I have referred to it, is not borne of malice against Sir David, just a lone cry for some intelligent evaluation of this man who is almost single-handedly leading the blind into the ditch with himself when they espouse his "teachings" without due diligence as to its eternal consequences.
Perhaps the Lord in His infinite mercy may yet touch Sir David's heart and save him from an eternity of loss, and eternity of agony and anguish of soul and spirit.

"Goodbye, Beloved Brethren"

You may well remember around the activities of the Exclusive Brethren meetings convened in Aberdeen in the summer of 1970, presided over by James Taylor Junior, referred to as "Big Jim."

The blasphemous nature of the meetings held that year on the 24th/25th July as recorded on the tapes that were to become known as the" Aberdeen tapes;" the principal evidence regarding those awful scenes, that beggar belief. There were further incidents that one would not care to speak of for fear of defiling others.

When the above book was published, it appears that a universal operation, quickly devised by the Exclusives, was put into practice to obtain every copy of the book and to destroy it forthwith. The colossal effort smoothly and swiftly proved to be highly successful.

I managed to obtain an ex-library copy of the book in very poor condition, and after reading it I subsequently sold it on-line. Since then I felt it was a necessary addition to my Brethren history collection, and I sought to purchase a replacement.  Times without number I searched the "web" without any success. there did not appear to be any copies for sale in the world. Either all copies had been destroyed, or those who were in possession of one were not happy to sell it how ever inflated the price offered.

A few days ago I learned that someone had two copies and wanted to give one away! He/she gave it to one of the first contacts who wanted to add it to a particular exhibition. The owner of the two copies was overwhelmed by the number of requests! I can only think he/she was quite unaware of its rarity.

Today I received a copy that I had tentatively tried to buy. It is in really good condition, and appears to be the a copy that belonged to F.F. Bruce! My long and  painstaking search has found its fruition, but it is bitter-sweet, just glancing through some pages deeply disgusts me, and offends my soul's sensitivities. But it is only a "document" in the diverse and complex history of the Brethren Movement.

The book "Goodbye, Beloved Brethren" was written by a journalist, Norman Adams, who spent over ten years investigating and writing about the activities of the Brethren in North-East Scotland. It was published in 1972.

Angels

Back in November 1997 a brother in one of the South Wales Assembly felt  exercised to ask various "speakers" from among the Assemblies to participate in a series of Biblical subjects.

The subjects were very demanding of effort in studying the Word of God, but I believe were of a good measure of help and edification for the gathered believers.

I was "allocated" the subject of Angels, an unusual but  interesting task. I had never heard any ministry of length on this subject, but nevertheless a goodly number of references to angels had been my experience.

A few weeks ago I discovered a modern reprint of a nineteenth century compilation edited by one who chose to use his initials, with no other means of identification. As such practice among "Brethren" was prevalent during that century I searched for some enlightenment as to the writers' identity. His initials appear in the invaluable book "Brethren Writers: Handbook for the Serious Collector," by Arnold D. Ehlert. I have found his listings to be very accurate, with but a few errors, which is hardly surprising considering the nature of such a work.

Feeling fairly confident that the author of "A Book of Angels" was probably an Assembly-based believer I took a little risk and purchased it; it was "not that expensive" was how I justified that risk! But it took a long time for it to finally arrive.

It proved to be a huge disappointment with not the faintest suggestion of "Brethren" influence. It is filled with quotations from various "Bishops," and even has a number of secular poems of no spiritual value at all, of course. It is further replete with superstitious, and the most fanciful illustrations of so-called angels, such that are not worthy of simple censure; they are indeed an  abomination.

L.P also edited a compilation in 1906, entitled: "The Inheritance of the Saints." I will studiously avoid that tome!

I have learnt a valuable lesson due to the lack of due diligence in searching out the necessary information to fully confirm the origin of this particular book. I was deceived by my eagerness o have found another "treasure," and I feel suitably humbled, if not humiliated.

It is apparent that in the nineteenth century it was common practice for authors to adopt this method of, (I feel like saying,) "partial identification" with their writings. And so I suppose this is a gentle warning that may prove helpful to others and make me fel a little less stupid!

A Deadly Enemy threatens Christianity in the  UK

I have no interest, knowledge or participation in politics of any hue. I have never voted in my life, and never intend to do so, even were it to become compulsory; an aim of some more vociferous advocates of so-called democracy, in itself a flagrant violation and denial, of that very principle. Unfortunately it is practically impossible to remain free from imbibing some of the poison of the present political scene; if one just turns on their mobile phone, or logs in to their computer, one or more "news-worthy" items meet the eye, appearing unbidden on the screen.

Generally it is easy to disregard these intrusions, but occasionally the attention is caught even if somewhat subconsciously. This was the case in my experience just a few days ago.

A believer in South Wales had come under the scrutiny of a "body" claiming to be the National Secular Society," founded in 1866, to advocate for  "secularism and the separation of religion from state affairs." If it really meant what it said I would welcome the second part of this statement, but that part doesn't mean what it implies.

(Below is a portrait of Charles Bradlaugh the first President of the N.S.S.)

The first principle of the Society is blatantly atheistic and decidedly opposed to the Christian Faith.

The Society's vehement accusation levelled at this School Teacher was in connection with his propagation of  "Creationism" as found in the Word of God. It's case against him subsequently failed, he legislation in Wales surprisingly differing from that in England. But my interest in the report of the case, was actually aroused by two significant statements. Just to stress, I have never even heard of this Society before.

These two statements of some note follow: "this is the only life we have, and that we should work for its improvement." Undeniably atheistic!                                                                In England "teaching Creationism as a "scientific theory,  is banned!" How many believers are aware of this biased legislation?

If the same legislation operated in Wales the school teacher would have suffered some form of disciplinary action.

I have no interest in challenging this biased and flawed law, which permits, and promotes the "evolution theory," even using it as the basis for the development of school pupils' progress in so-called understanding. But i feel I must warn my fellow believers of this insidious Society whose dealings will continue to corrupt and cause many  citizens in this divinely much-favoured, to "do that which is good in their own eyes." Judges 17:6; 21:25.

Moved to Prayer

On some very notable occasions , by the grace of God, I have been moved to prayer. This is nothing of myself, it is all of Christ, He is "the Father of compassions." (New Translation J.N.D.) These seasons are notable because they remain upon my heart after long years. I thoroughly believe that every child of God can recall similar situations in their "walk, their manner of life."

This recalling of past experiences that thrust their way into my naturally cold, hard heart, was stimulated just yesterday by a situation determined the Lord I have no doubt.

If you are aware to any degree of the sufferings of my only son, Adam, you will be able to appreciate more intelligently. Adam is paraplegic having suffered a spinal stroke in April 2015. He was for some months quadriplegic, but mercifully the Lord answered prayer and Adam slowly regained movement in his left side. But he remains completely paralysed down his left hand side. He cannot stand, wash or dress himself; indeed he cannot get out of bed without the assistance of a Carer using a sliding board to help with the "transfer." There are numerous other effects which are not necessary for me to catalogue at present; but he has further complications with the onset of kidney stones in the last two years. He has had 13 operations in connection with this condition, and is scheduled to have another on January 6th, if the Lord will.

I have included these details to convey the nature of my perplexity in regard to his Care Package costs. (I hasten to add these costs are met by the local Council.) But now with the upheaval in the U.K.'s Benefit Policy I have to fill in complex forms annually. The form for his care funding was rendered so difficult I needed help. And so I sought the Throne of Grace.

I feel that my movement was directed divinely, and my wife and I took Adam to the Civic Centre to seek professional help. In  the Centre there are six "positions" which are able to be manned by trained staff. Four positions were in operation, which soon became five. We did not have to wait for many minutes before we were called over to explain our difficulty. I will not speak at great length regarding this interview, but I must tell you how the Lord undertook.

Adam and I met with the most lovely, sympathetic, and compassionate lady that one could ever wish to meet. She talked with us in the tenderest of tones, asking politely about Adam's condition, and dreadful experience. And to our amazement told us of her father's present health condition, undergoing palliative care. He had suffered a stroke which had compressed his spinal chord rendering him paralysed. He is also in stage four of a cancer, and she herself is trying to bypass the bureaucracy hindering her receiving help for the cost of "end-of-life care" for him, in a home.

She completed all that was necessary for our claim, and I was able to destroy my partially completed form as redundant. She told us warmly how much she had enjoyed meeting us, and wished us "Happy New Year." In wishing us well she "crossed her fingers" in a gesture of uncertain hope, and I felt it was unlikely that she was the Lord's. Immediately I looked up to heaven to ask that our loving God would "in His goodness lead her to repentance," and save her soul for all eternity.

That was for me the remarkable impression that this lovely lady had made upon my soul. And it is not possible to convey to you my great relief and wonderment at such an answer to prayer regarding the lifting of that burden of administration that had weighed on my mind for weeks.

I am not sure that this encounter exactly fits the heading of this paper, but it was the catalyst leading to my musing upon past experiences of "heart-movement" generated by the Holy Spirit in such a heart as mine. (Only proving it must surely be the experience of all who love the Lord Jesus. It would be precious to hear of these moments in the lives of His won.)

Very briefly then: a good number of years ago , Bernice and I were on holiday in Italy, and enjoyed an excursion to Milan. I am not sure if this was the first or second occasion. But we entered the cathedral, with its external architecture  a work of expert craftsmanship, and its interior replete with idols and icons, reminiscent of ancient Athens in Paul's day. It felt cold and alien to my soul. But I was drawn to watch a young man, in his late twenties, early thirties I would imagine. He was in a state of frantic earnestness, and moved slowly form one idol to the next, silently imploring in obvious deep distress of soul. I was certain at hat moment his sins were weighing heavily on him and he could find no relief. He completed his bowing before each and every idol and left the Cathedral as haunted as when he first came in. I was overwhelmed and longed to chase after him, but it was not possible, and if it had been I did not know more than a couple of Italian words. I have never forgotten him, or the hopelessness and horror of Romanism. I continue to hold him in my heart and seek his salvation.

I met an eastern European lady selling the "Big Issue" in a car park. She was heavily pregnant, and I gave her a little cash; her gratefulness far exceeded my meagre gift to her. She ever remains upon my heart. and in my prayers.

Around about ten years ago I saw a young man in a super-market,; he had no feet and fingers missing from both hands, but he was walking and shopping! It was amazing and heart-breaking at the same time. He too lodges in my affections and prayers.

Finally, one Lord's Day we set out to Break Bread and as we drove up our own road we espied a tramp. There was no doubt that he was "genuine;" apart from his dishevelled appearance, he had a face much weather-beaten. I wanted to stop and invite him to our house for dinner, but our Lord's invitation must prevail. I prayed for him as we continued on our way, and hoped I might see him again, bu talas it was never to be. I love him in the Lord, and trust that the Saviour might go after him and arrest him with His love.

May the Lord give me and all His loved ones, hearts of compassion and sympathy in some measure like unto His own.

"Becoming obedient even unto death"

If I may direct you to my earlier "Post" in connection with this verse, "Posted" on September 30th, it might help.

"For let this mind be in you [individually] [or, "among you," [collectively] that was also in Christ Jesus. who subsisting in the form of God thought it not a thing to be grasped at to be on equality with God, but emptied Himself. taking a bondman's form, taking His place in the likeness of men, and having been found in figure as a man, humbled Himself, becoming obedient even unto death, and that the death of the cross." Philippians 2:5-8.

There is a controversy regarding the clause at the head of this address. I have found it to be of deep concern as touching the atoning death of God's lovely Son. of late I have heard it expressed in worship and I have been distressed.

I understand the thought expressed and the reason given for it; but the explanation does not satisfy me at all.

The difficulty concerns the end of the stated clause, "even unto death." There are those who (almost) demand that it should read, "up to" or "till death." The problem they "see" is it might suggest that the Lord Jesus obeyed death. Far be the thought! But this had never crossed my mind for a moment, not until it insinuated its way into my mind when hearing a brother intimate it in his prayer.

I have always quoted it during my life as a believer as it appears at the head of this paper. My difficulty is twofold, and I trust that I may be able to convey it with reverential awe.

Firstly: "Up to," or "till" surely that the Lord stopped short in His obedience!

Secondly that His death was not an act of obedience? Where does that leave us?  With an act of disobedience?    Perish such a blasphemous suggestion! But this translation leaves room for such an interpretation.

I unequivocally declare on the basis of Scripture that His death was an act of the most wonderful obedience. An act of obedience to the Father's will, nay even to His command.  John 10:17&18.

I as emphatically state that Christ was not subject to death; nor could death subjugate Him, it had no claim upon Him, no hold over Him, and no power against Him; He is, He was, the Lord of glory, very God Himself.

But nevertheless I contend for the truth that He willingly submitted Himself to death, in perfect obedience to the will of His Father; but not until He had summoned death to come! Thus death was obedient to Him!

"becoming obedient even unto death, and that the death of the cross." Philippians 2:5-8.

AV; J.N.D; W.K; R.V; all render this phrase as "unto death."

I think it is possible that G.C. Willis has "popularised" the phraseology "until death," in his book "Sacrifices of Joy," perhaps influenced by Dr. C.J. Vaughan's translation.

I must remark that there is much in Mr. Willis's book of devotion to Christ, and some helpful instruction. I bear this godly man no ill will.

An Elusive Hymn Writer

I suspect that the title to this Post is a little misleading, but readers will easily grasp what is meant by it.

Only last Lord's Day in Breaking Bread we sang the beautiful hymn that begins with "A mind at perfect peace with God." My habit is to always look to see who wrote the words of or hymns; I am especially pleased if the writer had connections with the Assemblies. I do not denigrate other writers at all, but I am interested in the history of these things. Remember we spend much time in singing, it forms a significant part in our worship. it is lovely to feel an intimacy with the composer.

In many hymn books this hymn is attributed to Catesby Paget who was born in 1868 and "called home" in 1938. It is recorded of him that he "belonged to those known as Plymouth Brethren and engaged in published controversy in response to (mainly Anglican) contemporaries; including both Lord Shaftesbury and Bp. Ryle.

Another stating that this hymn was quoted by Spurgeon in 1869, attribute this lovely hymn to his father, Berkely Thomas Paget, who was married to Sophia Askell Bucknall. Paget was born on November 29th 1809 in London and died on July 16th 1878, in Apsley Guise, Woburn, Bedfordshire.

The Hymnary.org informs us that it is published in 35 Hymnals, but add to the confusion as to Paget, recording his lifetime as 1814-1899.

Stem Publishers merely state it to be a 19th Century hymn.

Finally to exasperate me even more, Hymnal.net lists the hymn as the composition of Horatius Bonar 1808-1889. This is fairly certain to be erroneous.

I cannot close this Post without quoting two of its most beauteous verse; inexplicably omitted by Harold S. Paisley in his book "The Believers Hymn Book Companion."

So nigh, so very nigh to God,                                                               I cannot nearer be;                                                                             For in the person of His Son,                            I am as near as He.

So dear, so very dear to God,                                                               More dear I cannot be;                                                                      The love wherewith He loves the Son,                    Such is His love to me.

An Unusual Word and an Unusual Phrase in the Scriptures

A Word

Sometimes when reading The Word, a word or phrase of Scripture seems to strike a chord within one's heart and mind. It causes me some real delight, and a longing to express it, as cast upon the Spirit of Truth Himself, for He is the Divine Instructor.

Just recently I became aware of a word that had intrigued me before, but sadly I had not "chased after it," if such an expression is suited to this exercise.

Now I make no pretension to any profundity in these thoughts, rather an element of simple joy in my spirit. The Word of God never ceases to amaze; what other book could one read every day of a lifetime? Perish the thought that I would ever cease from its study, or be deprived of its possession by some tyrant; how would I "go on?"

"For this reason I bow my knees to the Father [of our Lord Jesus Christ.]" Ephesians 314.                                                                                                          The emphasis is my own to direct us to that particular word. We own unequivocally that in a soon-coming day, at the name of Jesus, every knee, whether of beings celestial, terrestrial or infernal, all WILL bow the knee to own the Lordship of Jesus Christ to the glory of God. Philippians 2:9-11.          We are familiar with the phrase "to bow the knee," but here it is divinely recorded, "my knees," plural.

I am not suggesting that this is the only occurrence in the Word, but I see yet another wonderful thought unfolded by the Holy Spirit. Paul was not exhibiting subjection here I suggest, (though he was always in subjection to his Lord); nor specifically engaged in worship; but rather he had adopted an attitude beautifully suited to prayer.

Daniel practised this lovely exercise habitually, "he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime." Daniel 6:10.

In Gethsemane's garden in the depths of His soul's anguish, the Lord Jesus Himself, "fell upon His face," "fell upon the earth," "and kneeling down He prayed." None else could give such confirmation to this thought.         Matthew 26:39; Mark 14:35; Luke 22:41.

A Phrase

" Making mention of you at my prayers."                                               Ephesians 1:16. [New Translation J.N.D.]

It must be obvious that this is a phrase that is in perfect harmony with the "word" above. It is emphatically suggestive of specific times set aside for prayer. Paul knew the essential need of  consecutive periods of prayer, supplemented by the prayers that constantly emanated from his soul; special times devoted to prayer. He was thus an imitator of his Lord in this necessary practice as a dependent man.

An Explanation

I feel that an explanation for the need to publish my last blog, "but emptied Himself," is perhaps in order. I am aware that this may not convince all who take time to read it, but it will clarify my thoughts regarding what I believe to be a fatal error regarding God's only-begotten Son here in incarnation.

On every occasion of singing the lovely hymn that begins, "Lamb of God our souls adore Thee," written by J.G. Deck, a brother of superlative ability in expressing so many precious truths in his hymns, I have declined to sing the words "Thou didst lay Thy glory by." Hymn 27 Psalms And Hymns and Spiritual Songs 1978.

And in my desire to find help with the divine disclosure in question, I turned to brethren whom I hold in the highest esteem; brethren who were foremost in teaching the Scriptures; those whom I regard as being the finest teachers of the Word since the Apostles. And I became more and more alarmed by some of the phrases found in their writings. I hasten to add that our grasp of things divine, heavenly, spiritual and eternal, develops over time, just as revelation has been granted to us in increasing measure as we read through the written Word of God in its entirety; and therefore these dear brethren may well have expressed such thoughts differently at a later date.

But nevertheless J.N.D. writes, "He strips Himself of His own glory;" also, "He laid aside the form of Godhead;" and further, "Leaving the form of God in abeyance."        But Darby did pen these words, "when He was in the form of God, He emptied Himself, through love, of all His outward glory;" that is much in keeping with what I have in mind.

W.K. uses the phrases, "When about to become a man, He did not carry down the glory and power of Godhead;" "He put in abeyance all His glory."                                    But in so many of his works his defence of the intrinsic deity and impeccable humanity of Christ is unparalleled. His co0mmentary on the Gospel of John is to be treasured.

These are but a few lines from great men of God that cause me to be wary, because even the most erudite, spiritual and godly of men may use words that they might wish they had retracted earlier, or perhaps would express differently.

My purpose is not to condemn these my beloved mentors in the faith, but to relieve my heart of something which continues to burden me, particularly with my failure to express my apprehension of these profound revelations relating to the Person of the Son.

"But emptied Himself"

"For let this mind be in you [individually] [or, "among you," [collectively] that was also in Christ Jesus. who subsisting in the form of God thought it not a thing to be grasped at to be on equality with God, but emptied Himself. taking a bondman's form, taking His place in the likeness of men, and having been found in figure as a man, humbled Himself, becoming obedient even unto death, and that the death of the cross."         Philippians 2:5-8

What depths of divine profoundness, it is infinitely surpasses all the mind of man; and is, with difficulty, barely comprehended by the believer. And that is why there is so much controversy surrounding our efforts to apprehend it. Any thoughts as to it will certainly be challenged at best, derided at worst. But that must not deter us from casting ourselves upon the Lord that we may know all the help of the Holy Spirit as our Divine Instructor.

I would like to focus attention upon the phrase at the head of this paper, "emptied Himself." If I cannot explain, find words, to express my understanding of  this phrase, I nevertheless trust that the following statement may convey my poor thought in some suitable measure: He emptied Himself to incarnation. It is in absolute harmony with the context. He speaks clearly of the magnitude of His down-stooping to manhood.

The main thrust of this brief paper is to refute the teaching that Christ "laid aside, set aside, His glory" when He entered this scene. His glory was an intrinsic element of His Person; He could not divest Himself of that which an integral part of His personality. I speak in trembling reverence as human language and my grasp of it is feeble in setting forth divine things. Notice please: "And the Word became flesh, [entered into manhood] and tabernacled among us (and we beheld His glory a glory as of an only-begotten from a father, full of grace and truth."           John 1:14.

I believe that what Charles Wesley wrote "veiled in flesh the Godhead see," is a beautiful expression of this truth. The Lord "out of heaven," veiled His glory, He did not relinquish it. That His "flesh" acted as a veil is incontrovertible, "The new and living way which He has dedicated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh." Hebrews 10:20.

I remember a well-instructed brother saying on one occasion, referring to this wonderful scripture, "I could no more lay aside my personality than Christ could have laid aside His glory."

The Lord Jesus even as the Son of Man "subsisted in the very form of God," thus not as single attribute or feature of Godhead was relinquished by Him here below. he conjoined His intrinsic deity with His impeccable humanity in one indivisible Person.     Personally He remained in perfect equality with the Father and the Spirit, only in position had He take voluntarily the subject place, "the form of a bondman's form."

This paper is solely my responsibility, I do not claim it is in any way unique, but I alone can be made accountable, none of my fellow brethren.

Opioid Deaths: A Crisis in England and Wales

I have very little knowledge when it comes to drug addiction, by grace this awful enemy has never touched my immediate family. I do know of one young lady, a professing believer, the beloved daughter of a couple in Assembly fellowship, and the terrible consequences of this enslavement. It is beyond unbearable to see.

I believe we are still seeing the aftermath of the pandemic, its continual "fall-out" as it has been described. And this only enforces my view that obeying the Government in surrendering our divine right to gather to the Lord's Name, during so protracted a time was the most disobedient act of the responsible Assembly here in this scene, the Church universal. Since when has the Government of any nation had the authority to denounce the will of God for the obedience of His believing people? A prohibition to gather to Christ, as I would speak of it, was deemed unlawful. To excuse our failure in this by reference to Romans 13:1-4 is invalidated by the verdict of the High Court, the very "body" to which we are directed to comply. But far infinitely above that political  "argument," we read in the Word of God, "God must be obeyed rather than man;" Acts 5:29. One such Scripture should suffice; but notice how Peter and John addressed the Council at Jerusalem "If it be righteous before God to listen to you rather than God, judge ye." Acts 4:11. The most compelling of all pertinent scriptures in regard to my interpretation of this contentious issue was spoken by the Lord Jesus Himself and is a wonderful example of His divine wisdom: "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's." Matthew 22:21.

You may well ask what connection the period of the pandemic has to do with the heading of this article. A very relevant question. My simple answer is that we, that is the vast majority of Assembly-based believers, closed our doors, literally, to tens of thousands who were in desperate need. Never during my lifetime, nigh 79 years, has there been such a need and such an opportunity to dispense the love of Christ to the poor, needy, afflicted, and those "ready to perish." Where could the ones who were hungry, cold, sick, sorrowing or enslaved by addiction, an instrument of the evil on, possibly go for compassionate ministry for their bodies, and their never-dying souls?

The answer is practically nowhere, because we had shut up "bowels of mercies," when we shut them out from our halls and rooms, and hid away cowardly from possible contagion. We should be ashamed in the light of the love, grace and mercy that the Saviour has lavished upon us. How we thank our good and great God that His only-begotten Son never concealed Himself from all who sought His blessings, and that He never will.

I close with the quotation that brought about this unburdening of my heart .

More than 13,000 heroin and opioid deaths have been missed off official statistics in England and Wales, raising concerns about the impact on the government's approach to tackling addiction.

Research from King's College London, shared exclusively with BBC News, found that there were 39,232 opioid-related deaths between 2011 and 2022, more than 50% higher than previously known.

The Dismantling of Family Life in the U.K.

This may appear to be provocative to some, but that is not intentional on my part.

I was reading an article dealing with the obsessive reliance upon social media that characterises so many young people here in the U.K.

The Word of God reveals the mind of God concerning the preciousness of the family relationship; and it is alluded to right from the commencement of Creation. And immediately after the universal flood, mankind was exhorted to "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth." Genesis 2:24; 8:1.

This divinely-devised relationship mirrors that of the intimate one enjoyed by the believer: "He came unto His own (things) and His own (people) received Him not. But as many as received Him to them gave He the (right)authority to become children of God, to those who believe on His name."  John 1:11,12.

John's First Epistle is replete with the expression of family connections especially in chapter two. He uses the phrase "children of God" a number of times also.

We are so familiar with the lovely setting forth of the Hebrew Servant, especially as a beautiful type of our Saviour in His unspeakable love for His master, His wife and His children. Exodus 21:5.

I feel this is enough to confirm God's design for family relationships to be held in much honour as pleasing to Him.

To return to the article I referred to at the beginning of this post. The obsession with "social media," which plagues society, (that is a contradiction in itself,) especially the youth of today, has been thoroughly researched. It is not my purpose to extrapolate any statistics, but simply to record that which I find so disturbing in dismantling family ties.

it seems that a vast number of young people spend an inordinate total of hours in their own room in the family home. Spending excessive periods in the use of social media platforms, on their mobile phones and in "gaming." Their parents hardly see them when they return from school, college or the workplace. There is no opportunity for the family to share any kind of loving relationship, nor engage in conversation, as the younger members of the household spend their communications with their peers.

Social media is not inherently evil, but its few benefits are hugely outweighed by its nature to enslave almost anyone; it is not young people exclusively, you only have to walk abroad to see countless folk in constant conversation etc. on their mobile phones as they walk. Often oblivious to all around them; and sometimes rudely remaining on the phone while being served in the shops. it is a national malady.

I am sufficiently intelligent to realise I am practically ignorant of the "digital world," if that is and acceptable phrase. But what is causing me so much distress is the general disfunction of family life, and no hope of arresting its progress. but I am appealing to my fellow saints to exercise discipline to prevent this sad behaviour from breaking down the family unit. We are in danger of "losing" an entire generation.

May the Lord grant wisdom to every believing father and mother in order that family life will be characterised by family love, in the Lord.

Camp Mystic

Nothing can diminish the horror of the disaster at Camp Mystic in Kerr County, Texas; and only the Father of compassion, the God of all comfort, consolation and encouragement can meet the awful anguish of soul of all the bereaved, most especially parents who lost beloved children. The hearts of all believers go to all who suffered irreplaceable loss, in unreserved sympathy and love in Christ Jesus. Well we know words will never suffice, but behind our words there is the deepest sincerity of each heart. How we long that you might know the peace that surpasses understanding as enfolded in the bosom affections of the God of love. We continue to pray for you, the ones who are left to sorrow.

I need to draw attention to the claim that this camp is a "Christian" camp for girls. The epithet, designation, the title "Christian" is used, bandied about constantly, without any regard as to its true meaning and implications; often without a fragment of  understanding or discernment; Used for so much that exhibits not a single distinguishing mark that would demonstrate that it has a Scriptural basis to at least have some resemblance to that which is Christian in its origin.

I tentatively looked at their website after a brother had spoken about this appalling  tragedy during the prayer meeting. At that time i knew virtually nothing of the details, but naturally I felt an affinity with all who love Christ.

I will not enter into any details regarding the camp. But I was horrified by what the text that I read, and the photographs I saw. I have three grown-up daughters of my own, and I would never have allowed them to go near that place. I am sorry if this distresses any one who reads this "Post," but it is clearly time we exercised far more discernment when "things" are labelled as being "Christian."

Just one final thing. I tried hard to learn whether there is a place in North America named "Mystic," or a river ,perhaps. But my research afforded me no help at all. I only wondered, as it seems to me to call a "Christian" camp, "Camp Mystic" is totally inappropriate.

These thoughts are mine alone, no one else has input anything.

A Worrying Discovery about our Monarch

The U.K. has a self-confessed atheist as Prime Minister, something that would never have seemed a possibility even a decade ago. it is a frightful commentary on the ungodliness of our much favoured nation; a nation blessed of God, perhaps blessed more than any other; with a heritage of godly men and women down through many centuries; many of whom have left an indelible influence on the believing people of God found within its boundaries. We have a wealth of precious literature based on the Spirit-breathed Word of God. Along with a treasury of beautiful Christ-honouring hymns.

Now I find that our present King, Charles 111 is I suggest at best a humanist, at worst an idolater. Many of my brethren have somehow concluded that he is a Christian. How they can come to such a conclusion on the basis of his disgraceful behaviour, publicly aired, I cannot fathom.

But today I discovered an article which leaves me candidly horrified and I make no apology for pointing this article out and pasting some of its content to this "Post."

Under-linings for emphasis and context are all mine.

It wasn't exactly a run-of-the-mill royal occasion.

In the sunny gardens of the Highgrove estate, I stood in a circle with King Charles and an eclectic group who were attending his first "Harmony Summit".

We raised our arms in honour of nature as we stood around a fire, which was burning within a ring of flowers.

Presiding over the fire ceremony, in which we rotated as we honoured the north, south, east and west and then Mother Earth, was an Indigenous leader - an Earth Elder - wearing a headdress and a dazzling robe of blue feathers.

A conch shell was blown. Butterflies flew around the flowers. And, in a concession to modernity, as well as holding up feathers in a blessing for the King, the elder was reading his incantations from an iPhone.

The summit was a celebration of the King's philosophy of harmony with nature - an inaugural event that the King's Foundation hopes will become a regular gathering.

It brought together representatives from Indigenous peoples, including from tribes in the Amazon, along with environmentalists, climate campaigners, organic farmers, herbalists, educators, crafts people and philanthropists.

There were other visitors from Amazon too: a film crew from Amazon Prime, making a documentary for next year, who were poring over every moment as the sacred smoke coiled up over the apple trees in Gloucestershire.

The King, in a light summer suit, spoke a few quiet words of welcome, wearing a circlet of feathers and a scarf that had been draped ceremonially around his shoulders.

A humane, ruminative, humorous and quietly radical figure, he was at the centre of what he hopes will become the first of many such gatherings.

But it raised the question - and perhaps opened a window - into what the King believes. What is this thoughtful man really thinking about?

Harmony is the King's philosophy - it means that we should be working with the grain of nature rather than against it. Or "her", as he describes nature in his book on the subject, published in 2010.

It's about the inter-connectedness of all life, infused with a strong sense of the spiritual, and the idea that the human and natural worlds can't be separated.

It's the philosophy that stitches together his many different pursuits - on the environment, climate change, sustainable farming, urban planning, architecture, protecting traditional craft skills and building bridges between different faiths.

According to a source close to the King, it's "perhaps the single most important part of his eventual legacy", bringing together different strands of his work that might seem separate into "one philosophical world view about creating a better, more sustainable world for future generations".

In his book, Harmony - A New Way of Looking at our World, the King describes his purpose as a "call to revolution", and writes that he recognises the strength of the word.

His book moves from the importance of geometry, with patterns rooted in nature, to the designs in Islamic art and the inspiring dimensions of Gothic cathedrals.

A sense of the sacred in nature, as well as in people, seems to be an important part of this world view.

At lunch at the Harmony Summit, grace was said by the Bishop of Norwich, Graham Usher.

The King's idea of harmony dovetailed with a very deep personal Christian faith, he said.

"My sense is that he draws much of his energy and ideas from spending time in prayer and contemplation," said the bishop.

He said the King sees his role as serving others and a sense of this "is seen in how he is always keen to learn from other religious traditions, building bridges and fostering good relationships built on respect and understanding".

Within strands of Christianity, the King is also said to be have been interested in the Orthodox faith and its use of icons.

The focus of this inaugural Harmony Summit was drawing on the wisdom of Indigenous people, tapping into their knowledge and pre-industrial ways of working with nature.

Survivalist Ray Mears was there to welcome representatives of the Earth Elders group, who work to defend the rights of "original peoples", who have become the threatened guardians of the natural world. They were wearing traditional headdresses, face paint and ornaments, in among the flowers and trees of Highgrove.

"People's selfishness has taken them away from nature. They can't feel the breeze, they're too focused on the clock," said Mindahi Bastida, of the Otomi-Toltec people in Mexico.

The cacophonous modern world has broken our connection with nature, said Rutendo Ngara, from South Africa. She described our era as a time of "loud forgetting".

"It's well-being for all human beings, all living beings, visible and invisible, it's Mother Nature… Everything is connected and there's mutual respect."

These were people from forests and rivers who talked of the destructive pressures on them, from mining, oil and urbanisation.

Ailton Krenak, from Brazil, talked of rivers that that had been "erased by money" and seeing the dried-up, polluted waterways was like a much-loved "grandfather in a coma".

Highgrove, winningly wobbly with its crooked tiles and trees growing through holes in the roof of a shelter, is a lyrical sight on a summer's day. It's a model of harmony with nature.

How does that message work, when you step outside into an often angry, noisy and brutal world?

What makes the idea of harmony relevant, is that it puts ideas into practice, it's not just a "thought exercise", said Simon Sadinsky, executive education director at the King's Foundation, which teaches crafts skills to a new generation.

"It's not just a theoretical concept, it's not just a philosophy, it's grounded in practice," he added.

"There's a lot of awfulness going on in the world, it's hard to stay optimistic. You can feel completely powerless," said Beth Somerville, a textile worker who completed a King's Foundation course.

But she says the idea of "harmony in nature" inspires her work and helps to create things which can be both beautiful and functional, in a way that is "all connected".

"It does drive me to carry on and have hope."

I trust you will see why I have felt it necessary to inform a larger audience with this information. The departure from even a semblance of Christian values hastens on at an alarming pace. May our God have mercy on a ungodly and ungrateful nation, would it please Him. T.W.
